Co-written by: Salad Cesar. Anyone aware of the amount of chemicals included in highly processed food is aware of the importance and the benefits of organic foods in the first place. By the difference between conventional and organic food, we don’t necessarily imply the one between an organic and a non-organic apple. What needs to be insisted on consists in the real benefits of organic foods for health first and foremost.

Organic food represents part of the recommended diet for people who suffer from various chronic conditions like cancer for instance. Although lots of people claim that there is little difference in terms of nutrients, the absence of hormones and chemicals from organic food works great for the promotion of a state of well-being. Lots of consumer analyses do not refer to the difference in nutrients value, there are studies however that indicate superior characteristics and more benefits of organic foods in the first place.

It seems that among the benefits of organic foods we ought to include more vitamin C, higher levels of trace minerals and plenty of anti-oxidant nutrients. A report issued by the US Department of Agriculture shows that a significant decline has been registered in the level of minerals of the non-organic crops since 1940.

The fact that nowadays we store food extensively and we treat and process the products so much contributes to an alteration of the nutritional value.

The higher content of dry matter is one other of the benefits of organic foods. To make this clear, we have to consider the fact that the use of the artificial fertilizers causes the fruits or vegetables to retain more water and thus swell. Thus, a non-organic apple gives less food than an organic one. Nevertheless, besides the different amounts of nutrients, more advantages of organic food can be identified.

First of all, virtually no pesticide residues can be traced in organic products. Even if conventional food producers say that pesticides are no threat to human health, one doesn’t have to be an expert to know that the ingestion of anything chemical can’t be healthy and positive for the body in terms of effects. The benefits of organic foods are over-emphasized at present, with more and more people choosing them instead of conventional foods.

In time this preference will definitely trigger a shift of the market and even a reformulation of the standards that define organic food in the first place.

by Johnny Angolini

Do you take the glass and swish the contents around after the Sommelier pours a small amount of wine in your glass, and then set your nose over the glass rim acting as if you know what the heck you are checking for?

That was a mouthful I know, and a bit embarrassing from an English grammarian view point, but not as embarrassing as it will be if some one dares asks you, if you know what you’re doing when you’re performing this snobbish ritual.

In the early 20th century, when formal dining out was in it’s hay day, it was or seemed to be chic to check the nose of the wine and test it on your palette. But those days have gone by… And I mean long ago! So for your sake, please don’t ever do that when presented a bottle of wine at your table in a restaurant. Even if you are prompted to do so by the Sommelier or even a friendly waiter trying to score points with your party. Do not and I mean do not do this.

If you do accept the challenge, chances are you and the server will end up at the center of an uncomfortable and awkward moment. So for both of you, just tell the wine Sommelier or server that you are sure the wine will be fine and let them pour and be on their way.

While you manage to restrain yourself, realize that the larger the group the more likely you will experience a wine snob performing the wine swish, swallow and glowing attributes of the wine selection. For they just can’t refrain from describing the chocolate and berry nose, satiny finish and the slight taste of tannin. Just know they most likely don’t really have a clue, it’s all just made up crap.

Quasi wine aficionados are a dime a dozen and very easy to spot. It’s truly amazing to watch a wine drinker start spouting off flowery language attempting to describe which most often is just an average wine. And many times less than and average wine it turns out.

Present day rules, if such a thing exists, state that it’s best to just select a wine you like and leave it at that. It’s all about the wine drinking experience and enjoying it and time with your friends and family. Realize that your taste is just as well healed as anyone else you are most likely to hang out with or dine alongside. Do you really care if the wine has a hint of Rose’ or some other crazy mixture? Probably not.

A money saving tip: When dining out, call the restaurant ahead of time and ask if you can bring your own wine and if the restaurant can just charge corkage. This is a policy that a lot of restaurants have or are familiar with and are willing to provide you. It can mean the difference between buying a $12 bottle at a store and paying $25 to $40 for the same wine at the restaurant.

There is no payoff for being a wine snob. There is a big payoff for selecting a nice wine that you like and enjoy. A pleasant outing and keeping your dignity in tact is really worth killing the urge to appear as a wine expert. Let the quasi wine snobs look ridiculous . You will be glad you did.

There is a great deal to be said about the martini. There is so much that you can do with the drink itself! You may even find that while changing the drink itself you feel like the different tastes must be something new altogether. There are martinis that are mixed so that you could swear they were virgin while on the other hand you could end up with a mere hint of spice to your gin or vodka.

You may even be surprised with the many different methods for changing the quality of your martini that has nothing to do with the ingredients of the drink itself. Thanks to Mr. Bond we all know that a martini can either be shaken or stirred. This well known fact makes the martini shaker a powerful tool.

Though it may not seem it the martini shaker can be tricky. In order to use this appliance properly one must be quick both mentally and physically. From what goes into the container to how much force should be applied when using it the shaker is often misused.

Even though there are a great many drinks that come with fruit or flowers as decoration the martini is one of most interchangeable. It can range from something simple and sleek to something colorful and fun without losing the grace that embodies the martini.

There is a certain air that is often lent to individuals seen holding and drinking from martini glasses. The martini itself is at times associated with individuals who are wealthy, graceful, and/or dangerous. It is also thought of as a sexy drink and thus the glass it is found in is sometimes seen as a symbol for these traits.

Martini glasses come in a variety of colors and shapes. They often lend a hand to the elegance and effectiveness of the drink itself with twisted handles or floating cups.

You will often find ?zesty? garnishes within a martini. Citrus, olives, and onion are not uncommon in this drink.

Though the martini is usually decorated with these particular objects you may find yourself surprised. Martinis can hold many things depending on what kind you are having.

More often than not the objects found in your glass are doing more than just acting as dressings. They are set there specifically to be pleasing to you, either visually or through your taste buds. Sweeter drinks are obviously set with sweet compliments more often than not.

All and all martinis are wonderful, no matter what kind of mood you?re in. This is because they can be altered so much that they can be smooth when you just want to relax or hard when you want to let loose. There?s no end to the things you can do with a martini!

How many times have you looked at the pizza coupons in your kitchen drawer and then spent half an hour trying to decide what to order? Of course, if you’re single, that’s probably a rare occurrence. But if you’re not living alone, deciding what pizza toppings to order can be quite an ordeal. (Especially if you have kids!)

Yes, it does become more of an uphill battle the more people are involved with choosing between the many yummy toppings. Maybe it is best not to even mention the word pizza?

So have you ever wondered what the most popular pizza topping are in the United States? Most people have their favorites, and are curious as to how their choices compare to the average pizza lover. Well, the number one spot when it comes to favorite pizza toppings in America will probably come as no surprise.

It’s the old standby, pepperoni. Something like 25% of all pizzas sold in the United States are pepperoni and cheese pizzas. Sausage is in second place, which again should be no surprise to most people. And you can probably guess number three, too. That’s right, it’s mushrooms. And about 70% of pizza places use canned mushrooms, not fresh ones. Most people ordering pizza seem to prefer the canned, although fresh mushrooms are gaining in popularity.

So there we have the top 3. Next we have the veggies. A lot of people like onion on their pizza, making it number four on the list, then olives are number 5 with twice as many choosing the black olives than the green ones.

After these major favorites, the rest are pretty much all tying for the fifth place. Here we have Ham, Peppers, Bacon, Hamburger and Tomatoes. So there. How is your family fitting in with the rest of the pizza lovers in the US? Are you the run of the mill pizza lovers, or are you a bit more exotic in your pizza choices?

by Dr. Jones

Soft drinks are the greatest source of calories for us fat americans. We get more of our daily calories from soft drinks than any other category of food. More than ice cream, more than fries, more than meat, more than bread. Think about it, all these calories, very little nutritional benefit.

Over the same period, companies like Pepsi and Coca-Cola have thrived. Warren Buffet must know a lot about American habits to have invested in Coke 20 years ago. Now Coke is doing the same thing to the rest of the world. And surprise, the rest of the world is also becoming fat.

Luckily, the fine people at Coke and Pepsi know that sick or dead customers are not good customers at all. So they (and other food companies) worked diligently over the past 20 years and came up with a nice portfolio of artificial sweeteners (Equal, Aspartame). These significantly reduced the caloric value of soft drinks.

The only issue I have with these chemically derived products is that more and more studies seem to point to significant side effects over time. Many studies have found these products to be responsible for cancers of all sorts. I know that many of these studies might have questionable methodologies, but where there is smoke…As a result, many people are looking for natural alternatives.

Stevia is a natural sweetener used around the world for centuries. From Russia to Tibet and Chile, Stevia has a long track record as a sweetener with very little impact on our caloric intake. Stevia is also recommended as a natural sweetener for people with diabetes. Some research even finds Stevia can reduce the probability of getting Type II diabetes (see Stevia and Diabetes). Bottom line is that Stevia is a natural sweetener that can reduce our calory count significantly.

Sadly, our dear US government, in its wisdom, has opined that Stevia could potentially be unsafe. Although the studies they point to have been publicly denouced, what it comes down to, in my humble opinion, is this: Its hard to make money off of a natural product like Stevia. You cannot patent it and without a patent, anyone can produce and sell it. Not good for commercial outfits like Cargill (HFCS) or Monsanto (Aspartame) or Tate & Lyle (Splenda). (breaking news: FDA has now allowed Stevia, but only if used by Coke or Pepsi in an expensive trademarked formulation!)

As a result, there are few products made with Stevia. Natural low calory energy drinks or soft drinks are rare despite increasing demand from health-conscious consumers. Here are a few that I’ve tried.

Carbonated Drinks: Virgils: Not easy to find online. They have a few flavours (Cola, Root Beer). Good taste. Promising if they become more available. http://www.bevnet.com/news/2008/8-25-2008-Diet_Real_Cola_Virgil’s.asp.

Lo-cal Energy Drink: GURU All-natural Drink: A great alternative to the usual chemical cocktails. Contains Stevia and other natural ingredients. I enjoy the taste and it definately give me energy. I buy it at their website : Natural Energy Drink. I just found out they are currently working on new formulations with music star Kanye West that will use other sweeteners such as Agave and other low-glycemic natural prducts.

Another cool brand that is prodicing some nice products is Virgils: Hard to locate in stores. Good range of products. Tastes good and also uses other good ingredients. Virgils Sodas. Also available in health food stores.

Well what is the way that large chocolate companies make chocolate? For this they need to have a large investment or capital as to buy the necessary equipment used in the process of mking chocolates and then also the ingredients.

Cocoa beans cant be harvested in a lot of places in United States. So these companies have to go places like the Ivory Coast, South America and Ghana.

The cocoa trees give out fruits which are more like a melon. These fruits are being harvested by hands and inside them there are almost 20-40 seeds. These seeds are the Cocoa seeds or the future chocolate.

Now lets start for the next step. As soon as these seeds are being removed they are then placed in heaps and piles to get them into a process known as fermentation. This is process to let the beans have time to harden up and the beans to get dark and also let the cocoa flavor develop in them. This whole process can take upto a week, after which these beans are being transported to the chocolate factory.

When companies import cocoa beans they have to import it in large quantities and this much large a quantity is not done by air it is usually done by ship. As soon as the ship gets to the dock the seeds are then transfered to the company or the munufacturing area through rail road cars so that they can be cleaned and stored at a point.

The chocolates taste different because of the cocoa that comes from different countries. The process of making chocolate is then started by roasting the cocoa at a very high temperature in revolving roasters.

Next, a special hulling machine dries it so the shell of the bean is removed and its content known as the nib is the one that is actually used in making chocolate.

After this the “nib” is turned into liquid form. The process done to make the nibs into liquid is known as milling after which maintainance of taste comes for which many other ingredients are being added which include chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar and milk.

Chocolate liquor is a combination of milk and sugar. The end product of this coarse brown powder called a chocolate crumb. As for milk, this is taken from the farm where it is tested, pasteurized and mixed with sugar until it turns into a thick, taffy like material.

Afetr this is done, cocoa butter is thrown into it to bring out the taste and the rich creamy look of the chocolate. After this another machine which is known as steel rollers grind and refine the mixture to make it much more smoother

What we get now is known as the chocolate paste. To make this paste clean from the sandy particles, it is kept inside a machine called the conches for 1-3days.

When the paste has been smoothened, this is the time that the liquid chocolate is poured into the mold. The process is very fast inside a factory as some produce about a thousand of these a minute that is something that can never be done manually. If the chocolate comes in many varies, this is also the time that almonds and peanuts are added.

The air bubbles are then set free from the machine through a cooling tunnel so the chocolate is evenly settled and the chocolate paste is turned into the solid form.

The last step is obviously to wrap this up, put these in boxes and then deliver it to stores.

Here the customers buy these chocolates from the shelves and enjoy their delicious and yummy taste without even thinking and paying attention on how are these chocolates being made in large companies.

Do you love seafood, but live far away from any ocean? You can still go fishing in lakes and streams of course, and get fresh local seafood that’s delicious. But if you’re looking for something more along the lines of a crustacean, you’re pretty much out of luck. When you decide to go eat at a restaurant, you have no way to know how fresh what you’re being served is, no matter how expensive the price is. And at a grocery store, you know that frozen doesn’t taste the same, and that even live fish are most likely old and tough, and possibly sick. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just get fresh lobster meat without having to go through all the work.

It sounds too good to be true, but you can really get fresh and delicious lobster meat sent right to your door, and for less then you pay now. So why would you ever want to get lobster any other way. But how does this work? It’s simple really. A fisherman brings in their haul of lobster for the day, and it is immediately boiled, cleaned, and packaged to be shipped to you. This means that you’re getting the freshest, healthiest lobster that you can possibly get, without having to go to the store. And you’re getting it for less than you would pay anywhere else!

But why is lobster meat so much less expensive when you buy direct to your home? It’s because when you order directly from the fisherman, you’re cutting out the middleman who’s raising the price on your meat.

When you order lobster from a restaurant, not only are you paying for the lobster, you’re also paying for the restaurant’s overhead, and helping to give them a profit margin. And because you’re getting service, you’ll need to pay a tip, and for any drinks you order. When you order from a grocery store, you’re still paying overhead and for a margin. But when you get lobster delivered directly, you pay only the amount that the restaurant or grocery store would pay.

When you’ve got fresh lobster meat, there are so many different options of how to cook it that you’ll be amazed. Having friends over for a party, make them a delicious lobster appetizer. Want to make a simple and healthy lunch? Then a lobster and spinach salad is an excellent way to give yourself a heart healthy and protein rich meal. When you’re cooking for your family, you can warm them up and give them a hearty meal with a lobster newburg. And if you want a simple and elegant meal in no time, try a lobster spaghetti, dressed lightly with oil.

When you want to treat yourself, lobster meat is the way to do it. It’s fresh, delicious, and easy to order online, and there are so many great ways to prepare and enjoy it that you won’t know what to pick first!

When it comes to the holidays, nothing is more important to people then expressing their love and friendship to those they care for.

Most people express their Easter festivities through store bought cards, whilst others opt for a happy easter greeting card online as it’s a perfect way to show that you are thinking of someone during the holiday season without having to buy a card.

But why do we send Easter greeting cards during this time in Spring? Well the only real reason that matters is that people who are close to us need to know that they appreciated and loved for who they are. You can also use Easter cards to put gifts like vouchers and store cards in.

Whether you want to use the happy easter greeting card online as a way to send someone special a nice gift or just to send your warm thoughts, there is going to be a wide selection of cards for you to pick from.

Be mindful of the type of card you send if you get a happy easter greeting card online as it is very easy to misconstrue the meaning of card like these that are send haphazardly. If getting an Easter card online for your mom then get one that contains words from the heart.

As it is east to get this part wrong, spend a few moments choosing the right card with the right words as it would be easy to offend someone if you said too much or too little.

The Cost of Easter

You may have heard people joking about how the cost of the happy easter greeting card online is about the same amount of money that you would spend on a normal card.

This is actually probably impossible as online Easter cards are exceptionally cheap – you can get them for a few pennies on the dollar if you do your research online for the best software. Normal card from a store would cost your 6 dollars or so.

You can still find stores that sell really cheap cards for a buck or two but they quality won’t be worth it.

In order to save yourself a little money, you could always make and create your very own happy easter greeting card. While it may sound childish to some, if it is done correctly it could have a huge impact on the person you are giving it to.

There are many options to save money this year. By far, the best is to send your happy Easter greeting cards online this year. When done well, you can have a very affordable Easter whilst still keeping in the spirit of it all.

by Sherry Shantel

Traditional Connecticut clambakes aren’t just a meal, it’s an event – a social gathering that doubles as a very popular and delicious way to feed many guests, whether it be a wedding party, a corporate event, a family reunion or simply a romantic evening for two.

The hands-on eating lends itself to a casual atmosphere which makes it a terrific icebreaker when meeting new people. Plainly put, clambakes are fun! And with summer’s approach, it is the perfect moment to get the water boiling.

Clambakes were originally prepared on the beach, over a huge fire. But some local laws have now prohibited beach fires, so today’s technique would have the clambakes cooked over the more efficient propane burner. Even though the traditional method is not often practiced, what’s important is that the traditional atmosphere still lives.

What foods are included in a clambake may vary. Some folks like to serve quahogs (hard shelled clams) just before the main course. Others prefer steamers (soft shelled clams) dipped in butter and salty broth to start. Mussels can be an additional or alternative shellfish and some folks like to get fancy and serve shrimp and clam chowder as well. Accompaniments include potatoes, corn on the cob, salads, slaws and cornbread. For dessert, ice cream is still the best. But whatever the supporting acts, the star of any clambake is the lobster bisque.

For that truly authentic clambake, you must first go to the beach and dig a pit two or three feet deep, line it with rocks, and tend a wood fire until the rocks reach 400 degrees F. The hot rocks are then thickly lined with wet seaweed and layered with potatoes, corn in the husk, and more seaweed. The pit is covered with a tarpaulin, weighted down with more rocks, and is left to steam for about three hours.

If you want a simpler method, just have the shellfish and accompaniments steamed on a stovetop. You can put rocks in a large metal washtub across a couple of burners on the stovetop and layer it with clams and seaweed. You can then pour in a couple of gallons of seawater until it boils. Steam the clambake for twenty minutes.

But if you think seawater and seaweed are making things complicated, how about having a clambake on your grill over hot coals? This way, it will help boil the live lobster and potatoes first as they take the longest time to cook. The clams and corn will be cooked through the grill’s heat.

For a much simpler version of preparing Connecticut clambakes, just place the clams in a pot add in corn and chorizo and some aromatics such as saffron and shallots. Steam it until the clams open. Since following the traditional clambake cooking method is too laborious, many people opt for the simplest technique. What’s really important is that you and your guests will have a fun and healthy time feasting on Connecticut clambakes.
